The best gym is the one you never have to travel to.
For many of my clients across Central London, the biggest barrier to consistent training was never motivation. It was the commute to a gym, the queue for equipment, or a demanding schedule that made a fixed studio session hard to keep. Training at your own home, hotel or residence gym removes that barrier entirely, and it changes what is realistically possible week to week.
The single biggest predictor of whether someone sticks with training is how easy it is to actually start. Every extra step between deciding to train and being in the session is a chance to talk yourself out of it. When the gym is downstairs, in your building, or in your hotel, that friction disappears. Sessions happen because they are simply easier to say yes to.
Many of the residences I train clients in across Marylebone, Mayfair, Knightsbridge and Chelsea have genuinely well-equipped gyms, sometimes better than a standard commercial chain. Squat rigs, a full dumbbell range, cable machines and cardio equipment are increasingly standard in premium developments. The photo above is a good example: a private residence gym with everything needed for a serious strength session, and nobody else waiting for the rack.
For clients who value their time and their privacy, whether public figures, executives or anyone who simply prefers not to train in a crowded commercial space, a home or residence gym offers total discretion. No waiting for equipment, no distractions, and no risk of a session becoming a networking opportunity. This is one of the reasons a private 1:1 setting suits so many of my clients better than a public gym ever could.
A hotel gym is rarely as well equipped as a home setup, but with the right programming it does not need to be. Bodyweight work, resistance bands and whatever equipment is available can be built into an effective session that keeps your progress on track. This is exactly the approach I use for clients on business trips or holidays through international travel training, so a change of location never means a break in consistency.
The other advantage of training at your own location is that the programme is built around what you genuinely have access to, rather than assuming a full commercial gym. Whether that is a compact home setup, a well-equipped residence gym, or a hotel gym with the basics, every session is planned to make the most of it. Nothing generic, nothing that assumes equipment you do not have.
If your schedule, privacy or simple preference means training away from a public gym suits you better, that is exactly what mobile 1:1 personal training is built for. Two examples close to home: Olly has trained clients at One Hyde Park in Knightsbridge, and is the in-house residents' trainer at River Park Tower in Nine Elms.
