Staying strong, mobile and independent for the decades ahead.
If you're in your fifties, sixties or beyond, strength training is one of the most useful things you can do for your health. It protects muscle, supports your bones and joints, and helps you stay independent and active for longer. It is also far more approachable than many people expect.
Without regular resistance training, muscle mass and strength gradually decline with age, and bone density can fall too. That affects everyday things: getting up from a chair, carrying shopping, climbing stairs, recovering from a fall. UK physical activity guidelines recommend muscle-strengthening activity on at least two days a week for adults, and balance and coordination work for older adults. A good programme brings those pieces together.
No. People in their fifties, sixties and seventies respond well to resistance training, and starting later still brings real benefits. Every programme should begin from where you are now, not where you were at thirty. If you have a heart condition, high blood pressure, a joint replacement or take regular medication, check with your GP first. New clients also complete a short health questionnaire (PAR-Q) before the first session.
What happens outside the session counts too. Eating enough protein across the day supports muscle, and good sleep helps you recover and adapt. Hormonal changes around the menopause can affect muscle, bone and recovery for many women, which is one more reason resistance training is worth prioritising, and programming can be adapted to how you feel from week to week. I cover the basics in eating for longevity, and offer nutrition guidance alongside training.
We begin with a consultation to talk through your goals, history and any injuries. From there I build a bespoke programme, logged in your personal training app, with support on WhatsApp between sessions. Many clients want to move well, stay strong and keep doing the things they love, rather than chase a particular look, and the programme reflects that. If back discomfort is part of the picture, read about training with lower back pain.
